About the Church of the Nativity

The Church of the Nativity in Bethlehem marks the exact spot believed to be the birthplace of Jesus Christ. It is the oldest continuously operating church in the world and has been active for almost 1700 years!

The Church of Nativity is built over a cave which is traditionally believed to be the Manger in which the Virgin Mother Mary gave birth to Jesus. For this reason, the Church of the Nativity has been a site of pilgrimage since the second century and countless Christians gather here every year on Christmas Eve to pray and conduct mass. It has been named a World Heritage Site by the United Nation’s Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO).

Light a Candle: Miracles Do Happen

Nuns' Breakout Album Tops Billboard's Classical Music Chart

ADVENT AT EPHESUS, the Advent album from the Benedictines of Mary, Queen of Apostles, is No. 1 on Billboard magazine’s Traditional Classical Music Chart for the fourth straight week and is proof that the culture desires more of the sacred and divine in these preparatory weeks leading to the celebration of Christ’s birth. Rising above a group of Classical albums that includes Andrea Bocelli, Placido Domingo, Fifty Shades of Grey Classical, the Mormon Tabernacle Choir’s Once Upon a Christmas, and the London Symphony Orchestra’s Christmas Classics, ADVENT AT EPHESUS is a verified hit that will remain a classic for Advent seasons to come!

“Purchase your copy of ADVENT AT EPHESUS today to experience the sublime musical masterpiece contained in this holy album…and head to benedictinesofmary.org for a special end of Advent promotion and grab a copy for someone you love to enjoy for years to come. It’s clear that with a No. 1 ranking for the fourth straight week, ADVENT AT EPHESUS is here to stay and is a must-have for the collection! Even in these final Advent days leading to a grand celebration of Christ’s coming to earth, we hope the music and peaceful reflections found in ADVENT AT EPHESUS will continue to be loved by and shared with as many as possible!" said Monica Fitzgibbons, co-founder of De Montfort Music.

Since its Nov. 20 worldwide debut from De Montfort Music and Decca Records, ADVENT AT EPHESUS has blessed the world with the sacred and sublime music of a hidden and contemplative religious order tucked away on Missouri’s rural countryside. Hidden in prayer and sacrifice, their music now is available worldwide. In addition to the CD, the album is available as a digital download for all devices at a variety of online retailers, including Amazon, Barnes & Noble and the iTunes Store.

Captivating diverse audiences, ADVENT AT EPHESUS, which also captured an impressive top 200 ranking in Billboard’s mainstream chart, holds its spot this week amid all album categories.

The breathtaking release that has taken the world by surprise also ranks No. 9 on the Contemporary Christian chart, No. 10 on the Gospel chart, and No. 20 on the Internet Album chart.

“We want to again express our sincere gratitude to everyone who is supporting the album. We hope everyone will purchase this beautiful masterpiece, a labor of love given to the world by The Benedictines of Mary, which goes to help the sisters in their many needs as a growing contemplative community,” said Fitzgibbons.

This treasury of prayers, now released on Kindle, will help you go to the Lord with courage and pray to receive God's grace.

Sometimes, the Pope said of prayers and devotions, one goes to the Lord "to ask something for someone;" one asks for a favor and then goes away. "But that," he warned, "is not prayer," because if "you want the Lord to bestow a grace, you have to go with courage and do what Abraham did, with that sort of tenacity."

This comprehensive treasury of Catholic prayer includes everyday prayers, devotionals, how to pray the rosary, litanies, the Stations of the Cross, Eucharistic prayers, prayers to prepare for confession, prayers to the saints, Marian prayers, family prayers, and more.

Advent of the Heart

Fr. Alfred Delp,S.J., was a heroic German Jesuit priest who was imprisoned and martyred by the Nazis in a Nazi death camp in 1945. At the time of his arrest, he was the Rector of St. Georg Church in Munich, and had a reputation for being a gripping, dynamic preacher, and one who was an outspoken critic of the Nazi regime. He was an important figure in the Resistance movement against Nazism. ' ' Accused of conspiring against the Nazi government, he was arrested in 1944, tortured, imprisoned, and executed on Feb 2, 1945. While in prison, Fr. Delp was able to write a few meditations found in this book, which also includes his powerful reflections from prison during the Advent season about the profound spiritual meaning and lessons of Advent, as well as his sermons he gave on the season of Advent at his parish in Munich. These meditations were smuggled out of Berlin and read by friends and parishioners of St. Georg in Munich. ' ' His approach to Advent, the season that prepares us for Christmas, is what Fr. Delp called an "Advent of the heart." More than just preparing us for Christmas, it is a spiritual program, a way of life. He proclaimed that our personal, social and historical circumstances, even suffering, offer us entry into the true Advent, our personal journey toward a meeting and dialogue with God. Indeed, his own life, and great sufferings, illustrated the true Advent he preached and wrote about. '' From his very prison cell he presented a timeless spiritual message, and in an extreme situation, his deep faith gave him the courage to draw closer to God, and to witness to the truth even at the cost of his own life. These meditations will challenge and inspire all Christians to embark upon that same spiritual journey toward union with God, a journey that will transform our lives.' ???As one of the last witnesses who knew Fr. Alfred Delp personally, I am very pleased this book will make him better known in America. The more one reads his writings, the more one clearly recognizes the prophetic message for our times! Like his contemporary, Dietrich Bonhoeffer, Delp ranks among the great prophets who endured the horror of Nazism and handed down a powerful message for our times.

Advent/Christmas CD and Prayer Book: God With Us

New prayer book and CD: God With Us, by OCP composer Dan Schutte, reminds Catholics everywhere that amid the busyness of the Christmas and Advent seasons, God is all around.

“Because of the distractions and hectic pace of Christmas preparations, many of us find it difficult to keep our minds and hearts on the real Christmas story,” says Schutte. “I created God With Us to help people pause and remember that this is the season of hope…to open their hearts to receive God’s love.”

The 84-page prayer book consists of 12 different exercises that contain inspirational images, a reflection, prayers, a scripture passage and lyrics for a corresponding song. Additionally, God With Us includes self-reflection questions and keystone phrases to keep the reader introspective throughout the day.

God With Us is bundled with a companion CD featuring 12 songs (corresponding to the prayer exercises) written and recorded by acclaimed Catholic composer Dan Schutte.

“We’re surrounded every moment by God’s love. And, if people are inspired to do a bit more to nourish their spiritual selves, perhaps this little prayer book—with its music, scripture, images and reflections—can provide some structure and guidance” says Schutte.

The printed book and companion CD are available at ocp.org/GodWithUs. An iBook edition will be available through iTunes in winter of 2012.

The new site is easier to navigate, more appealing in design, and more robust in content, putting it at the forefront of cutting-edge Catholic websites.

These diocesan campaigns will air in conjunction with the new Catholics Come Home® “mini campaigns” this Advent and January. A number of dioceses are participating, including the Archdiocese of New Orleans, the Diocese of Colorado Springs, and the Diocese of Venice, Fla., which means more souls will be reached in regions across the U.S.

A Truce During the War on Christmas

While the "war on Christmas" rears its ugly head once again in our secular culture this Advent, Catholics Come Home® continues to combat the attempts by secular groups to censor and silence the voice of Christians in America. “CatholicsComeHome.org proclaims the good news of Jesus and His Church, by using mainstream media to remind people of the hope that Christianity offers our wounded world,” said Tom Peterson, Founder and President of Catholics Come Home®.

The mainstream media in Cincinnati, site of the latest Catholics Come Home® diocesan partner initiative, appears to be fully embracing this outreach of the New Evangelization.
With over 3,000 evangomercials™ airing in Cincinnati, Dayton, and Lima covering the tri-state area (Ohio, Indiana, Kentucky) this December and January, it will be hard to miss these inviting messages calling families home to Jesus and His Church.

Catholics Come Home® is simultaneously airing its first international campaign in the Archdiocese of Vancouver, B.C., where 41% of the population has no faith, which is reflected in the following media coverage.

This Advent, some CCH diocesan partners (New Orleans, Colorado Springs, Venice FL) will also air a second media campaign to keep up the momentum of the New Evangelization.

CatholicsComeHome.org evangomercials™ represent a proud and significant voice of hope for Catholics and all Christians in the public square. They are messages for the New Evangelization, aimed at a culture in dire need of faith in God. “Catholics Come Home® is bringing light into the darkness through our evangomercials™ ,” Peterson said. “We will not back away from the public arena. Now, more than ever, Christians are called to live and share their faith in Jesus Christ."

A first-time ever national primetime Catholics Come Home® TV ad campaign aired across the United States in English and Spanish (www.CatolicosRegresen.org) during the 2011 Christmas season. After the Christmas holiday, website access to the Wish List will continue year-round. The new online catalogue will be reloaded regularly with new wishes from mission dioceses, offering donors the opportunity browse through and select specific wishes to which they’d like to contribute.

“Catholic Extension’s Wish List is an important way we connect our donors with the very real needs of Catholics in mission dioceses. So it’s fitting that on its 25th anniversary, we’re offering a new way to conveniently access the Wish List online,” said Catholic Extension President Father Jack Wall.

Advent at Ephesus

Just a few short weeks ago, the priory of the Benedictines of Mary, Queen of Apostles, became a modern, high-tech recording studio for three days. You and the world can hear the fruits of that transformation tomorrow (Nov. 20) as De Montfort Music/Decca releases ADVENT AT EPHESUS.

The 16-track CD, also available for digital download, includes hymns the sisters enjoy singing during Advent at the end of Mass; polyphony; traditional chants; and the original work Adjuvabit Eam. Early reviews suggest it could be one of the surprise hits of the year. It has tracked in Amazon’s Classical Music top 10 for almost two weeks as preorders have poured in.

“It’s difficult to find the right words to describe the angelically perfect sound of ADVENT AT EPHESUS,” Royce Hood wrote recently at MariaNews.com. “The word ‘amazing’ is true but far from enough. The word ‘beautiful’ is also accurate and much closer to describing the sound. The word ‘necessary’ suggests the importance of sacred music in our secular world. Individually, none of the above words do ADVENT AT EPHESUS justice. Together the adjectives merely come close to describing the wonder that is to be available on November 20.”

This is, indeed, high praise for the contemplative sisters, who sing together daily but not with any professional aspirations. “We’re always singing,” said Mother Cecilia, the order’s Prioress. “So it was just natural that we make a CD so that we could give something of ourselves to people out in the world.”

“Out in the world;” that probably sounds strange – until you consider life at the Priory of Our Lady of Ephesus, tucked into the rolling farm land of northwest Missouri. The sisters tend a small garden, and they have an orchard. They sew sacred vestments for priests as their primary apostolate. And they sing.

“Music is an integral part of our lives,” Mother Cecilia said. “We’re in the chapel eight times a day singing to God, and it’s just something that comes naturally from our hearts.”

“To be around these sisters is like a glimpse into Heaven,” De Montfort Music co-founder Monica Fitzgibbons said. She and her husband Kevin formed De Montfort as a division of Aim Higher Media, and ADVENT AT EPHESUS is the label’s first release. “When we heard their music, we knew that there was something really special going on there musically that would fit in with our mission for the label.”

During a Nov. 10 visit with members of the Santa Cecilia Italian music association in Rome, Pope Benedict XVI suggested that the sacred music like that at the heart of ADVENT AT EPHESUS is a critically important element of prayer and evangelization in today’s world. “Music … is not solely an accessory to or external embellishment of the liturgy, but is itself liturgy,” the Holy Father said. “… sacred music, with its great tradition belonging to our western culture can, and indeed does, have an important role to play in encouraging the rediscovery of God, a renewed approach to the Christian message and the mysteries of faith.”

De Montfort enlisted Grammy® and Oscar® winning producer Glenn Rosenstein, who traveled to America’s heartland; set up a mobile recording studio on the 260-acre property the sisters call home; and captured all of ADVENT AT EPHESUS in only three days. Rosenstein, who has worked with a host of international stars and whose projects have generated sales well in excess of 250 million units (with artists from U2 to the New York Philharmonic) calls this one of his 10 all-time-favorite recordings.

“Our way of life here is truly one of great peace and tranquility,” Mother Cecilia said. “Since not everybody can come here – and since we’re not going out into the world – ADVENT AT EPHESUS is a way that we can just give a little taste of our life and let people experience it and be part of it.”

The sisters are truly gifted vocalists, and events leading up to ADVENT AT EPHESUS’ release suggests that they could achieve incredible recognition. Although there’s nothing necessarily unusual about that – “breakout artists” come along regularly – their outlook is definitely rare, if not unprecedented.

“We’re not professionals,” Mother Cecilia said. “It’s just that we sing together … all the time. We are singing on ADVENT AT EPHESUS – if it pleases God – for thousands and thousands of souls, maybe; to bring them comfort and to bring them joy – to lift their hearts to God.”

ADVENT AT EPHESUS also represents a rare approach – one that focuses on music celebrating the quiet, introspective anticipation of the Nativity that is the foundation of the Advent season. Here is the full track list for the album; including their original composition Adjuvabit Eam:

1. Come Thou Redeemer of the Earth
2. Angelus ad Virginem
3. Regnantem Sempiterna
4. Gabriel’s Message
5. Creator Alme Siderum
6. Hayl, Mary
7. Rorate Caeli
8. Praeparate Corda Vestra
9. O Come, O Come Emmanuel
10. Benedixisti Domime
11. Maria Walks Amid the Thorn
12. Alma Redemptoris Mater
13. Adjuvabit Eam*
14. O Come Divine Messiah
15. Vox Clara
16. Like the Dawning

The Greatest Miracle on DVD: Nov. 27 Release

The Greatest Miracle, the animated feature that tells a story of hope and faith against the backdrop of angels and demons, is set for DVD release on Nov. 27 by Arc Entertainment.

This captivating movie provides audiences with a fascinating unique look at the miracle that is the Roman Catholic Mass. The plot centers on three people who find themselves at the same Catholic Mass because of crises they are struggling to endure. Going to Mass is not new to any of them – but they need help to embrace its true meaning. What they experience during that Mass changes all of their lives forever.

“The film fulfills its mission, helping people embrace the Eucharist with more of their heart, soul, mind and strength,” said Randy Sly of Catholic Online.

Audiences will see for themselves on Nov. 27, when The Greatest Miracle releases on DVD. Pre-order the film now from Ignatius Press (www.Ignatius.com), or buy it on release day in stores nationwide. The Greatest Miracle is produced by Pablo Jose Barroso of Dos Corazones Productions, producer of the epic action adventure on Mexico’s Cristero War, For Greater Glory.

Hailed for its powerful and inspiring message, The Greatest Miracle masterfully portrays the invisible realities of the Catholic faith.

The Most Rev. David Ricken, Bishop of the Diocese of Green Bay, Wis., hails the film and its message. “The Greatest Miracle draws the viewer into the Mass by artistically portraying what we as Catholics believe to be taking place, but what we as humans are incapable of perceiving with our earthly senses,” Bishop Ricken said. “May we take from The Greatest Miracle an exhortation to participate more fully and more regularly in the Mass – a tremendous gift to the Church and indeed, to all humanity.”

“In that the film portrays our Guardian angels, how they help us, and how they bring our petitions and offerings to Heaven, I give the film two big thumbs up,” said Tim Drake of the National Catholic Register.

The Greatest Miracle is directed by Bruce M. Morris, the visual writer of the animated hits Pocahontas and Hercules. He earned an Academy Award® nomination for his work on 2009’s The Princess and the Frog. Oscar®-nominee Mark McKenzie, who orchestrated the score for Dances with Wolves, wrote the score for the film, which earned the 2011 Hollywood Music in Media Award for Best Original Score – Independent Film/Short/Documentary. McKenzie’s work also includes Men in Black, Spiderman and Ice Age: The Meltdown.

Surviving Depression: A Catholic Approach

Pauline Books & Media is excited to announce the release of Surviving Depression: A Catholic Approach, Updated and Expanded Edition. Originally published in 2003, the English edition has sold 25,000 copies and has been translated into 12 languages. This newest addition to the “Catholic Approach” line, which tackles everyday topics and offers solutions rooted in Catholic faith and values, is written by Kathryn J. Hermes, FSP, a best-selling author of spirituality titles and a survivor of depression herself. Responding to contemporary international, national, and ecclesial acknowledgements—post 9/11 unrest, prevalent natural disasters, engagement in war, and clergy sex abuse scandals—the updates in this book provide a grounded reality with which to approach depression in today’s age. An entirely new section, “8 Steps to Inner Peace,” offers insightful scriptural reflections and a step-by-step practical guide to finding peace. Suzanne Mayer, IHM, PhD, coordinator of Pastoral and Theological Studies at Neumann University reflects on this new edition, stating: “This tenth anniversary revision features a new sense of the even more complicated world in which her readers live and the even more distressing weights that rest upon them. The new second part provides a clear, lived-out eight step process inviting a contemplative stance acquired, as the author evidences, not by efforts to battle depression as an antagonist, but by coming out from under it.” For additional information or to request a review copy of Surviving Depression, please contact Ariana Tantillo at (617) 676-4490 ext. 4179 or e-mail atantillo@paulinemedia.com. Pauline Books & Media is the publishing house of the Daughters of St. Paul, an international Congregation of women religious, whose mission is evangelization through the means of social communication. They operate thirteen retail book centers in North America and a publishing and distribution facility in Boston, Massachusetts.

Catholic Voters' App: CATHOLIC VOTING GUIDE

Catholics mean business this election year.

The Confraternity of Catholic Clergy has launched CATHOLIC VOTING GUIDE – a free App for iOS, Android and Windows mobile devices developed by priests and deacons to help anyone cast a responsible vote in any election using a well-formed conscience based on Catholic moral principles.

The Android version is available now in the Google Play Store, and the Windows version is available now in the Windows Phone Store. The iOS version is now available at the iTunes and on the APP STORE on the device. For any of the three versions, search CATHOLIC VOTING GUIDE.

“Parties change; candidates change; political issues change,” said Fr. John Trigilio, president of the CCC. “But Catholic Values are the same yesterday, today … and forever. The CATHOLIC VOTING GUIDE App is timeless in its usefulness because of that. It will provide informative, empowering information in advance of the 2012 general election – and it will continue to fulfill its mission well into the future.”

Fr. Trigilio discussed CATHOLIC VOTING GUIDE with host Raymond Arroyo on EWTN’s The World Over on Oct. 4.

View the interview online at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DTAR0ufUfkA&feature=plcp.

The App focuses on six vital issues that every citizen – regardless of religious belief – should weigh in casting his or her ballot – Right to Life, Religious Liberty, Sanctity of Marriage, Private Property, Access to Essential Goods, and War & Peace. Information consistent with the teaching Magisterium of the Roman Catholic Church offers insight into each issue that is based on solid Catholic principles.

“Parish priests and deacons formulated this non-partisan guide,” said CCC Executive Director Thomas McKenna. “It is meant to help voters make an intelligent decision on Election Day – informed by faith and reason. It is a useful tool that voters can take right into the voting booth with them to assist them in voting according to their faith principles. We are excited and pleased to offer this App to American voters on the eve of such a critical general election.”

CATHOLIC VOTING GUIDE uses the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops (USCCB) letter Forming Consciences for Faithful Citizenship and the Vatican Congregation of the Doctrine of the Faith’s (CDF) letter Worthiness to Receive Holy Communion (written by then-Cardinal Joseph Ratzinger, now Pope Benedict XVI) as foundations. CCC members designed the App to identify, clarify and prioritize fundamental non-negotiable values that affect every citizen and every human being.

“The issues the CATHOLIC VOTING GUIDE focuses on affect every American regardless of religious belief,” Fr. Trigilio said. “Any voter can use this App to understand more clearly and completely the different sides of these issues based on the longstanding teachings of our Catholic Faith.”

“We encourage everyone to do two things between now and Nov. 6,” McKenna added. “Be certain they are registered to vote, and download this Free App and use it as they weigh their choices on Election Day.”

Prayer for the Year of Faith

The Year of Faith - A Bible Study Guide for CatholicsOur society is struggling with what Pope Benedict has called "profound crisis of faith that has affected many people." In response, the Holy Father has called us all to a Year of Faith from October 2012 to November 2013. We see the signs all around us: the demand for science to prove everything before we can believe it, the role of media and celebrities who deny the existence of God and denounce the role of the Church, and the ease in which we can all isolate God and faith into only one part of our life. In a follow-up to his best selling St. Paul Bible Study for Catholics during the year of St. Paul, Fr. Mitch Pacwa once again leads Catholics to a deeper understanding of Pope Benedict's call to action for the year. Perfect for individual or group study, this book is a wonderful guide to experiencing a conversion, growing in faith, and following Jesus Christ more closely. It shows us how to integrate every component of our life – relationships, morality, work, recreation, and all – into a meaningful whole. Make the most of Pope Benedict's Year of Faith, walking hand in hand with Fr. Pacwa as he guides you through the beauty and insights of Scripture in relationship to your everyday life.

Bishop Ricken Offers ‘10 Ways Catholics Can Live The Year Of Faith’

To honor the fiftieth anniversary of the Second Vatican Council and the twentieth anniversary of the Catechism of the Catholic Church, Pope Benedict XVI has announced a Year of Faith, starting October 11 and ending November 24, 2013. The goal is to strengthen the faith of Catholics and draw the world to faith by their example.

Bishop David Ricken of Green Bay, Wisconsin, chairman of the Committee on Evangelization and Catechesis of the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops, offers “10 Ways Catholics Can Live the Year of Faith.” Rooted in guidelines from the Vatican’s Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith, some of these suggestions are already requirements for Catholics; others can be embraced by Catholics at all times and especially during the Year of Faith:
1. Participate in Mass. The Year of Faith is meant to promote the personal encounter with Jesus. This occurs most immediately in the Eucharist. Regular Mass attendance strengthens one’s faith through the Scriptures, the Creed, other prayers, sacred music, the homily, receiving Communion and being part of a faith community.
2. Go to Confession. Like going to Mass, Catholics find strength and grow deeper in their faith through participation in the Sacrament of Penance and Reconciliation. Confession urges people to turn back to God, express sorrow for falling short and open their lives to the power of God’s healing grace. It forgives the injuries of the past and provides strength for the future.
3. Learn about the lives of the saints. The saints are timeless examples of how to live a Christian life, and they provide endless hope. Not only were they sinners who kept trying to grow closer to God, but they also exemplify ways a person can serve God: through teaching, missionary work, charity, prayer and simply striving to please God in the ordinary actions and decisions of daily life.
4. Read the Bible daily. Scripture offers first-hand access to the Word of God and tells the story of human salvation. Catholics can pray the Scriptures (through lectio divina or other methods) to become more attuned to the Word of God. Either way, the Bible is a must for growth in the Year of Faith.
5. Read the documents of Vatican II. The Second Vatican Council (1962-65) ushered in a great renewal of the Church. It impacted how Mass is celebrated, the role of the laity, how the Church understands itself and its relationship with other Christians and non-Christians. To continue this renewal, Catholics must understand what the Council taught and how it enriches the lives of believers.
6. Study the Catechism. Published exactly 30 years after the start of the Council, the Catechism of the Catholic Church covers the beliefs, moral teachings, prayer and sacraments of the Catholic Church in one volume. It’s a resource for growing in understanding of the faith. Another helpful resource is the U.S. Catholic Catechism for Adults (USCCA).
7. Volunteer in the parish. The Year of Faith can’t only be about study and reflection. The solid grounding of the Scriptures, the Council and the Catechism must translate into action. The parish is a great place to start, and each person’s gifts help build up the community. People are welcome as ministers of hospitality, liturgical musicians, lectors, catechists and in other roles in parish life.
8. Help those in need. The Vatican urges Catholics to donate to charity and volunteer to help the poor during the Year of Faith. This means to personally encounter Christ in the poor, marginalized and vulnerable. Helping others brings Catholics face-to-face with Christ and creates an example for the rest of the world.
9. Invite a friend to Mass. The Year of Faith may be global in its scope, focusing on a renewal of faith and evangelization for the whole Church, but real change occurs at the local level. A personal invitation can make all the difference to someone who has drifted from the faith or feels alienated from the Church. Everyone knows people like this, so everyone can extend a loving welcome.
10. Incorporate the Beatitudes into daily life. The Beatitudes (Matthew 5:3-12) provide a rich blueprint for Christian living. Their wisdom can help all to be more humble, patient, just, transparent, loving, forgiving and free. It’s precisely the example of lived faith needed to draw people to the Church in the year ahead.

“Every person of faith should draw courage from the tragically heroic witness of the Cristeros,” said Fr. Andrew Small, National Director of the Pontifical Mission Societies. “Their sacrifice reminds us that unless we learn from history, we risk repeating it. Besides being an important movie, it is extremely well done.”

October Baby: DVD Available September 11

The surprise hit OCTOBER BABY—an independent film that topped $5.3 million at the box office, sparked debate in national media and touched audiences nationwide with its entertaining love story and compelling message about the sanctity of life – debuts Sept. 11 on DVD with more than 2 hours of bonus features.

A production from Jon and Andrew Erwin and American Family Studios with Provident Films, OCTOBER BABY weaves a dramatic, romantic, humorous story of one young woman’s search for the truth after a life-changing discovery rocks her world. Distribution in the Christian bookstore market will be through Provident Distribution, while Twentieth Century Fox Home Entertainment will distribute to all other domestic markets.

OCTOBER BABY drew praise from the Catholic community and the mainstream media:
• From The Movie Reporter: “OCTOBER BABY is a powerful parable about healing…. It doesn’t preach, nor does it accuse, it merely makes a valid point that should be considered.”
• From the Los Angeles Times: “Fine performances and authentic emotion . . . a film whose poignancy is hard to deny.”
• From Fr. Peter West, Human Life International Vice President for Missions: “October Baby definitely has the potential to change hearts and minds.”

In the film as the curtain rises, Hannah hesitantly steps onto the stage for her theatrical debut in college. Yet before her first lines, she collapses. Countless medical tests all point to one underlying factor: Hannah’s difficult birth. This revelation is nothing compared to discovering that she was actually adopted . . . after a failed abortion attempt. Bewildered, angered and confused, Hannah embarks on a journey with Jason, her oldest friend. In the midst of her incredible journey to discover her hidden past and find hope for her unknown future, Hannah sees that life can be so much more than what you have planned.

OCTOBER BABY marks the feature debut of Jon and Andrew Erwin, who are multiple Dove Award winners for music videos featuring hit contemporary Christian artists such as Casting Crowns, Michael W. Smith and Francesca Battistelli.

Sisters of St. Joseph Tweet Daily Connecting Life and Faith

Faith doesn't stop when Catholics leave Mass every Sunday. They live it every day by participating in social justice work in their community, praying at home, and sharing their faith in small Christian communities.

Always doing the work of Church and faith, the two Sisters of St. Joseph of Carondelet, Joan Mitchell and Therese Sherlock, who publish Sunday by Sunday, SPIRIT for Teens are social.

Every day at 10:15 Catholic homeschoolers and religious education workers tune into Twitter for #OurCatholicFaith—a daily series of teen-friendly Catholic doctrine and questions about faith. The SPIRIT4Teens.com blog addresses the big issues raised in each week's gospel and relates them to a teenager's daily life. The SPIRIT Xtra YouTube playlist features popular music videos that relate faith to real life.

Sister Joan also Tweets daily at noon excerpts from her Sunday by Sunday gospel reflection and blogs about faith and social justice at KeepingFaithToday.com. For the more visually faithful, Good Ground Press created a beautiful set of Pinterest boards that feature books by all the http://csjstpaul.org/ and their art embodied in religious greeting cards.

Pope Benedict XVI joined Twitter June 29, 2011 saying "Dear Friends, I just launched www.news.va. Praised be our Lord Jesus Christ! With my prayers and blessings, Benedictus XVI." Sister Joan joins Pope Benedict XVI in Tweeting daily about Lent by suggesting simple activities to live faith during this holy season, "Today for #Lent: Visit a shut-in" and "Today for #Lent: Visit a church you pass regularly."

While Catholics are not avid readers of online religious materials per CARA, Good Ground Press hopes to catch the attention of people surfing on Twitter, Facebook, and Pinterest in hopes of sparking their interest in faith sharing.

An advocate of faith sharing in small groups, Sister Joan's new book, Mark's Gospel, the Whole Story is for individuals, bible study groups, and small Christian communities that want to use its simple tools, become active bible readers and explore the revealing patterns of the whole gospel. For Catholics and other faiths who follow the common lectionary cycle, the year 2012 is the year of Mark, Cycle B, in the Church's cycles of scripture readings. Mark's gospel is first to be written and the closest to oral traditions.

Good Ground Press publishes gospel-centered Catholic resources to draw people in to reflecting together, opening their faith lives to nourish one another, and sustaining one another in their commitments to the gospel work of mercy and justice.

The program officially launched June 15, and held two weeks of voting for Catholic readers to choose their favorite titles in two categories of books, Adult and Teen.

“The purpose of our Catholic Summer Reading Program is to keep Catholics reading and engaged with their faith during the summer vacation season, to expose them to new titles in all genres, and also to the Catholic novel – something that is becoming a rarity”, said Ian Rutherford, President of Aquinas and More.

The program features downloadable discussion guides for the winners, flyers that Catholic retailers can download and use in their stores, and much more. Parishes can even can use them to start up summer reading groups. There is also a suggested reading list for kids, complete with coloring pages.

This years' winners from the Adult Category include: “At the Heart of the Gospel”, a non-fiction work by Christopher West, who is an expert on John Paul II's Theology of the Body; “Christopher”, a novel about a potential convert by David Athey, and “The Power and the Glory” by Graham Greene, which is

Ancient icon makes its video streaming debut

One of the world’s oldest, miraculous images of the Madonna and Child is now viewable to people all over the world for the very first time.

The original icon of Our Mother of Perpetual Help, which dates back to the 1400s, can now be seen on a live video feed from inside the Redemptorist mother church of Sant’ Alfonso in Rome, Italy where this sacred masterpiece has been venerated since 1866.

For Christians around the world who have a devotion to Mary under this title, this will be the very first time the majority of them will be able to view the original image -- live, up close and personal – through the video stream!

With a simple click on the video player (www.maryprayforus.org), admirers from around the world, and those seeking answers to their prayers through Mary’s powerful intercession, can now spend time with this holy icon in the quiet of their own homes.

When he entrusted the original icon to the Redemptorists in 1866, Blessed Pope Pius IX did so with one stipulation: ‘make her known throughout the world.’ “We believe the Holy Father would be very pleased to see how we have delivered on his mandate over the past 146 years and particularly today with this video streaming announcement,” said Father Harry Grile, C.Ss.R., provincial superior of the Denver Province.

For more information on the icon please visit www.maryprayforus.org.

All interested in Catholic communication, new media, and social media are invited, including young adults (18+), ministry leaders, and priests and religious, to whom Pope Benedict appealed in his 2010 World Communications Day message, to “become an ever more pastoral presence on the web.”
The final day of the CNMC is dedicated to blogging and is titled the “International Catholic Bloggers’ Summit.” We are confident that all involved in Catholic communication will find this day both fun and informational.

SQPN creates engaging multi-media, specializing in audio and video productions (known as podcasts) faithful to the teachings of the Roman Catholic Church. Its mission responds to the Church’s call to use the media for religious information, evangelization and catechesis, and formation and education.
“Star Quest” refers to the star of Bethlehem that emerged and caught the attention of three Magi from foreign cultures. The Magi’s quest led to the discovery of the newborn Savior. The programs of SQPN tap into popular culture inviting people to journey together and discover their own encounter with Christ.

URBI ET ORBI MESSAGE OF HIS HOLINESS POPE BENEDICT XVI (Easter 2012)

Dear Brothers and Sisters in Rome and throughout the world! “Surrexit Christus, spes mea” – “Christ, my hope, has risen” (Easter Sequence). May the jubilant voice of the Church reach all of you with the words which the ancient hymn puts on the lips of Mary Magdalene, the first to encounter the risen Jesus on Easter morning. She ran to the other disciples and breathlessly announced: “I have seen the Lord!” (Jn 20:18). We too, who have journeyed through the desert of Lent and the sorrowful days of the Passion, today raise the cry of victory: “He has risen! He has truly risen!” Every Christian relives the experience of Mary Magdalene. It involves an encounter which changes our lives: the encounter with a unique Man who lets us experience all God’s goodness and truth, who frees us from evil not in a superficial and fleeting way, but sets us free radically, heals us completely and restores our dignity. This is why Mary Magdalene calls Jesus “my hope”: he was the one who allowed her to be reborn, who gave her a new future, a life of goodness and freedom from evil. “Christ my hope” means that all my yearnings for goodness find in him a real possibility of fulfilment: with him I can hope for a life that is good, full and eternal, for God himself has drawn near to us, even sharing our humanity. But Mary Magdalene, like the other disciples, was to see Jesus rejected by the leaders of the people, arrested, scourged, condemned to death and crucified. It must have been unbearable to see Goodness in person subjected to human malice, truth derided by falsehood, mercy abused by vengeance. With Jesus’ death, the hope of all those who had put their trust in him seemed doomed. But that faith never completely failed: especially in the heart of the Virgin Mary, Jesus’ Mother, its flame burned even in the dark of night. In this world, hope can not avoid confronting the harshness of evil. It is not thwarted by the wall of death alone, but even more by the barbs of envy and pride, falsehood and violence. Jesus passed through this mortal mesh in order to open a path to the kingdom of life. For a moment Jesus seemed vanquished: darkness had invaded the land, the silence of God was complete, hope a seemingly empty word. And lo, on the dawn of the day after the Sabbath, the tomb is found empty. Jesus then shows himself to Mary Magdalene, to the other women, to his disciples. Faith is born anew, more alive and strong than ever, now invincible since it is based on a decisive experience: “Death with life contended: combat strangely ended! Life’s own champion, slain, now lives to reign”. The signs of the resurrection testify to the victory of life over death, love over hatred, mercy over vengeance: “The tomb the living did enclose, I saw Christ’s glory as he rose! The angels there attesting, shroud with grave-clothes resting”. Dear brothers and sisters! If Jesus is risen, then – and only then – has something truly new happened, something that changes the state of humanity and the world. Then he, Jesus, is someone in whom we can put absolute trust; we can put our trust not only in his message but in Jesus himself, for the Risen One does not belong to the past, but is present today, alive. Christ is hope and comfort in a particular way for those Christian communities suffering most for their faith on account of discrimination and persecution. And he is present as a force of hope through his Church, which is close to all human situations of suffering and injustice. May the risen Christ grant hope to the Middle East and enable all the ethnic, cultural and religious groups in that region to work together to advance the common good and respect for human rights. Particularly in Syria, may there be an end to bloodshed and an immediate commitment to the path of respect, dialogue and reconciliation, as called for by the international community. May the many refugees from that country who are in need of humanitarian assistance find the acceptance and solidarity capable of relieving their dreadful sufferings. May the paschal victory encourage the Iraqi people to spare no effort in pursuing the path of stability and development. In the Holy Land, may Israelis and Palestinians courageously take up anew the peace process. May the Lord, the victor over evil and death, sustain the Christian communities of the African continent; may he grant them hope in facing their difficulties, and make them peacemakers and agents of development in the societies to which they belong. May the risen Jesus comfort the suffering populations of the Horn of Africa and favour their reconciliation; may he help the Great Lakes Region, Sudan and South Sudan, and grant their inhabitants the power of forgiveness. In Mali, now experiencing delicate political developments, may the glorious Christ grant peace and stability. To Nigeria, which in recent times has experienced savage terrorist attacks, may the joy of Easter grant the strength needed to take up anew the building of a society which is peaceful and respectful of the religious freedom of all its citizens. Happy Easter to all!

Single Catholics don’t walk Lent alone

ATLANTA, GA (March 1, 2012) – More than just preparation for Holy Week and Easter Sunday, the 40 days of Lent also recall the period Jesus spent in the desert – alone and tempted by Satan – before He suffered, died and rose from the dead. For various reasons, Catholics of all ages find themselves now making their own Lenten journey alone. They are widows/widowers, or divorced, or maybe they never married. The popular website CatholicMatch.com has published a Lenten guide that will enrich the season for anyone. The Catholic Playbook: Lenten Reflections for Singles is available now from Amazon.com and from Catholic Word. It includes 40 reflections for Lent written by single Catholics, and each concludes with a prayer written by Fr. Gary Caster, a college chaplain who contributes to EWTN and Magnificat. In one of those prayers, Fr. Caster writes, “Teach me your desert wisdom so that I can move through these 40 days more closely united to You and Your Father’s will.” All of the prayers provide meaningful insights into the reflections they accompany. “This Lent, I encourage you who are single to focus on the stunning fact that the yearning you feel in your heart to find a human spouse is precisely the yearning which the Lord feels for you,” writes Most Rev. Kevin Rhoades, Bishop of the Catholic Diocese of Fort-Wayne-South Bend in Indiana. “Lent is an ideal time for single Catholics to focus on growing closer to Christ,” said author/speaker Mary Beth Bonacci, “and this collection of meditations focused on our single state of life is an ideal way to do that.” The Catholic Playbook is edited by CatholicMatch.com Editorial Director Christina Ries. In addition to Bishop Rhoades’ foreword, the reflections by single Catholics and Fr. Caster’s prayers, it also includes an epilogue by Theresa Notare of the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops’ Secretariat for the Laity, Marriage, Family Life & Youth. “We used the concept of a ‘playbook’ because we wanted this book to be quick, practical and relevant to your life,” said Ries. “This book is a road map for Catholic singles to use in experiencing the most powerful Lenten journey ever.” She added that this is the inaugural edition of a series of Catholic Playbooks. “Our next one will focus on healing from divorce,” she explained. “We are making it super practical. It will deal with problems Catholic face, and offer solutions to those problems. Our goal is to finely tune all of the Catholic Playbooks to address issues that single Catholics wrestle with.” After the playbook on healing from divorce, Ries says other volumes in the series will focus on online dating for Catholics; discerning a vocation; dating and relationships; and being a single parent.

Fr. Malachi Martin: Possession and Exorcism are Real

Ted Adamson, author of the newly released addiction memoir "Up From Down" (Westbow Press), says possession and exorcism are real. "Part of the reason I wrote this book was to help people wake up to what we are dealing with," said Adamson, a member of AA and NA for 35 years. The book contains a never before released letter from Father Malachi Martin, a Catholic exorcist and advisor to three Popes. In the letter Father Martin says, "Possession can occur as a result of alcoholism and drug addiction. It opens a doorway to the soul." Link: www.upfromdown.info/evil.htm "It's about time we as a society acknowledge the existence of evil," said Adamson. The book contains an awakening where Adamson realizes he had become possessed. "You don't necessarily need an exorcist to get rid of a demon, although there are cases where they can be helpful," says Adamson. "God can and does extend grace thru prayer and meditation. That is what my book is all about. And something that most of the drug and alcohol counselors don't even understand." Adamson suffered from a 14 year addiction to drugs and has been clean for 35 years. "This (Up From Down) is a transparent revelation of the jail and rehab and court system abuses as well and an examination of all the aspects of treatment for addiction. And this information is worth knowing and certainly worth reading about in the words of Ted Adamson"-- Grady Harp, top 10 reviewer at Amazon.com Up From Down is available at Amazon.com, Barnes and Noble, and most major outlets. Also from the author's website:www.upfromdown.info This book will appeal to anyone with an addict or alcoholic in their family who are looking for real answers and not the usual pablum. Ted Adamson is available for print or radio interviews.
