Surviving Depression: A Catholic Approach

Pauline Books & Media is excited to announce the release of Surviving Depression: A Catholic Approach, Updated and Expanded Edition. Originally published in 2003, the English edition has sold 25,000 copies and has been translated into 12 languages. This newest addition to the “Catholic Approach” line, which tackles everyday topics and offers solutions rooted in Catholic faith and values, is written by Kathryn J. Hermes, FSP, a best-selling author of spirituality titles and a survivor of depression herself. Responding to contemporary international, national, and ecclesial acknowledgements—post 9/11 unrest, prevalent natural disasters, engagement in war, and clergy sex abuse scandals—the updates in this book provide a grounded reality with which to approach depression in today’s age. An entirely new section, “8 Steps to Inner Peace,” offers insightful scriptural reflections and a step-by-step practical guide to finding peace. Suzanne Mayer, IHM, PhD, coordinator of Pastoral and Theological Studies at Neumann University reflects on this new edition, stating: “This tenth anniversary revision features a new sense of the even more complicated world in which her readers live and the even more distressing weights that rest upon them. The new second part provides a clear, lived-out eight step process inviting a contemplative stance acquired, as the author evidences, not by efforts to battle depression as an antagonist, but by coming out from under it.” For additional information or to request a review copy of Surviving Depression, please contact Ariana Tantillo at (617) 676-4490 ext. 4179 or e-mail atantillo@paulinemedia.com. Catholic Voters' App: CATHOLIC VOTING GUIDE

Catholics mean business this election year.

The Confraternity of Catholic Clergy has launched CATHOLIC VOTING GUIDE – a free App for iOS, Android and Windows mobile devices developed by priests and deacons to help anyone cast a responsible vote in any election using a well-formed conscience based on Catholic moral principles.

The Android version is available now in the Google Play Store, and the Windows version is available now in the Windows Phone Store. The iOS version is now available at the iTunes and on the APP STORE on the device. For any of the three versions, search CATHOLIC VOTING GUIDE.

“Parties change; candidates change; political issues change,” said Fr. John Trigilio, president of the CCC. “But Catholic Values are the same yesterday, today … and forever. The CATHOLIC VOTING GUIDE App is timeless in its usefulness because of that. It will provide informative, empowering information in advance of the 2012 general election – and it will continue to fulfill its mission well into the future.”

Fr. Trigilio discussed CATHOLIC VOTING GUIDE with host Raymond Arroyo on EWTN’s The World Over on Oct. 4.

The App focuses on six vital issues that every citizen – regardless of religious belief – should weigh in casting his or her ballot – Right to Life, Religious Liberty, Sanctity of Marriage, Private Property, Access to Essential Goods, and War & Peace. Information consistent with the teaching Magisterium of the Roman Catholic Church offers insight into each issue that is based on solid Catholic principles.

“Parish priests and deacons formulated this non-partisan guide,” said CCC Executive Director Thomas McKenna. “It is meant to help voters make an intelligent decision on Election Day – informed by faith and reason. It is a useful tool that voters can take right into the voting booth with them to assist them in voting according to their faith principles. We are excited and pleased to offer this App to American voters on the eve of such a critical general election.”

CATHOLIC VOTING GUIDE uses the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops (USCCB) letter Forming Consciences for Faithful Citizenship and the Vatican Congregation of the Doctrine of the Faith’s (CDF) letter Worthiness to Receive Holy Communion (written by then-Cardinal Joseph Ratzinger, now Pope Benedict XVI) as foundations. CCC members designed the App to identify, clarify and prioritize fundamental non-negotiable values that affect every citizen and every human being.

“The issues the CATHOLIC VOTING GUIDE focuses on affect every American regardless of religious belief,” Fr. Trigilio said. “Any voter can use this App to understand more clearly and completely the different sides of these issues based on the longstanding teachings of our Catholic Faith.”

“We encourage everyone to do two things between now and Nov. 6,” McKenna added. “Be certain they are registered to vote, and download this Free App and use it as they weigh their choices on Election Day.”

Prayer for the Year of Faith

The Year of Faith - A Bible Study Guide for CatholicsOur society is struggling with what Pope Benedict has called "profound crisis of faith that has affected many people." In response, the Holy Father has called us all to a Year of Faith from October 2012 to November 2013. We see the signs all around us: the demand for science to prove everything before we can believe it, the role of media and celebrities who deny the existence of God and denounce the role of the Church, and the ease in which we can all isolate God and faith into only one part of our life. In a follow-up to his best selling St. Paul Bible Study for Catholics during the year of St. Paul, Fr. Mitch Pacwa once again leads Catholics to a deeper understanding of Pope Benedict's call to action for the year. Perfect for individual or group study, this book is a wonderful guide to experiencing a conversion, growing in faith, and following Jesus Christ more closely. It shows us how to integrate every component of our life – relationships, morality, work, recreation, and all – into a meaningful whole. Make the most of Pope Benedict's Year of Faith, walking hand in hand with Fr. Pacwa as he guides you through the beauty and insights of Scripture in relationship to your everyday life.

This treasury of prayers, now released on Kindle, will help you go to the Lord with courage and pray to receive God's grace.

Sometimes, the Pope said of prayers and devotions, one goes to the Lord "to ask something for someone;" one asks for a favor and then goes away. "But that," he warned, "is not prayer," because if "you want the Lord to bestow a grace, you have to go with courage and do what Abraham did, with that sort of tenacity."

This comprehensive treasury of Catholic prayer includes everyday prayers, devotionals, how to pray the rosary, litanies, the Stations of the Cross, Eucharistic prayers, prayers to prepare for confession, prayers to the saints, Marian prayers, family prayers, and more.
